About Data Units
Bit (b) - The smallest unit of data in computing, representing a single binary value of 0 or 1.
Byte (B) - A group of 8 bits. The basic unit used to represent a single character of text in most computer systems.
Binary vs. Decimal Units - Two standards are used for measuring data:
- Binary (IEC Standard): Based on powers of 2. Units are named kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB), etc. 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes.
- Decimal (SI Standard): Based on powers of 10. Units are named kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), etc. 1 KB = 1,000 bytes.
Common Misconceptions - Storage device manufacturers typically use decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), while operating systems often report in binary units (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). This difference explains why a "1 TB" hard drive shows less space in your computer.
Examples of Data Sizes
| Data Size | Example |
|---|---|
| 1 Byte | A single character |
| 2 KB | A plain text email |
| 5 MB | A high-quality JPEG image |
| 700 MB | A standard CD-ROM |
| 4.7 GB | A standard DVD |
| 25 GB | A single-layer Blu-ray disc |
| 1 TB | Approximately 250,000 MP3 songs |
| 1 PB | 2,000 years of MP3 audio |
| From | To Bytes (B) | To Kilobytes (KB) | To Megabytes (MB) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Bit (b) | 0.125 | 0.000125 | 1.25 × 10-7 |
| 1 Byte (B) | 1 | 0.001 | 1 × 10-6 |
| 1 Kilobyte (KB) | 1,000 | 1 | 0.001 |
| 1 Kibibyte (KiB) | 1,024 | 1.024 | 0.001024 |
| 1 Megabyte (MB) | 1,000,000 | 1,000 | 1 |
| 1 Mebibyte (MiB) | 1,048,576 | 1,048.576 | 1.048576 |
| 1 Gigabyte (GB) | 1,000,000,000 | 1,000,000 | 1,000 |
| 1 Gibibyte (GiB) | 1,073,741,824 | 1,073,741.824 | 1,073.741824 |
