About Sitemap Generator
What is a Sitemap?
A sitemap is an XML file that lists all the URLs of your website. It helps search engines discover and crawl your website more efficiently, which can improve your SEO.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
<url>
<loc>https://example.com/</loc>
<lastmod>2023-07-25</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
<priority>1.0</priority>
</url>
</urlset>
Key Sitemap Elements
| Element | Description | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| <loc> | URL of the page. This URL must begin with the protocol (such as http) and end with a trailing slash, if your web server requires it. | Yes |
| <lastmod> | The date of last modification of the page. This date should be in W3C Datetime format (YYYY-MM-DD). | No |
| <changefreq> | How frequently the page is likely to change. Valid values: always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, never. | No |
| <priority> | The priority of this URL relative to other URLs on your site. Valid values range from 0.0 to 1.0. | No |
Submitting Your Sitemap
After generating and downloading your sitemap, you should:
- Upload it to your web server (typically in the root directory)
- Add a reference to it in your robots.txt file:
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml - Submit it to search engines through their webmaster tools:
- Google Search Console
- Bing Webmaster Tools
- Yandex Webmaster
Best Practices
- Keep your sitemap under 50MB and 50,000 URLs
- For larger sites, create multiple sitemaps and a sitemap index file
- Use the appropriate change frequency for each page
- Set priorities based on the relative importance of pages
- Keep your sitemap up to date as your website changes
